The Kabar lake is one of the most relevant natural resources of this area. The multiple tangible and non tangible benefits that the lake offers to this are are countless. It is interwoven in the lives of the people of this region offering different services to different users and different communities. The lake acts as a fishing ground for the fishermen (mallaah) community of the area. Both organised and non organised fishing is carried out in the lake with the non organised having a larger share. On the other hand, it serves as productive land for farmers of the near by villages during the dry parts of the year (when the water is limited to a smaller part of the lake). Other than food, aquatic plants acting as fodder for the animals is widely collected by the nearby villagers.
Other than this, Kabar is very important as it collects the rainwater from the area around thus giving an outlet to the water and saving the nearby area from flooding. This water is frequently used for irrigation for the adjacent fields.
An important feature of the lake is the island, Jaimanglagadh, on its southeast corner. The island is home to the goddess Jaimangla temple. This is one of the very important and reveared places in the region and people from all over the district and beyond come to seek the blessings. Also, it acts as an important getaway destination and picnic spot for the people around. The island also houses a widespread woodland and large monkey population.

Apart from all this, the lake is also a very good host. Every year it welcomes hundreds of migratory birds, which come here to spend the winters. The biotic life of the lake (both flora and fauna) are amazing in itself.
All over the lake contains all kinds of offerings, social, environmental, religious etc for the region and comes up as a very important landmark for the region. Thus, giving a deeper thought to maintaining the balance and conservation of the lake has become very important. We will discuss all these aspects in greater details in the coming posts.
